Rainy Yet Perfect Wedding on Lake Como: Why a Solid Plan B Makes All the Difference
A wedding on Lake Como is a dream shared by couples from all over the world. Its timeless beauty, historic villas, and breathtaking lake views make it one of the most sought-after destinations in Italy for a luxury wedding. This real wedding at Villa Cipressi in Varenna is the perfect example of why careful planning—and especially a well-designed Plan B—is essential to enjoy a truly stress-free wedding day.
From Florida to Lake Como: A Clear Vision from the Start
I first met this lovely couple during a video call while they were in Florida. Their vision was immediately clear: they wanted to get married in late spring in Italy to avoid the intense summer heat they were used to back home. Most importantly, they dreamed of saying their vows facing the enchanting waters of Lake Como.
We began with a curated venue selection, narrowing it down to four or five exceptional locations. When they came to Italy, we spent two wonderfully intense and fun days together scouting venues around the lake. In the end, they fell in love with the refined elegance of Villa Cipressi, and we secured their wedding date for May 16th.
Meticulous Planning and One Non-Negotiable Request
From that moment on, we planned the wedding down to the smallest detail. We held scheduling calls every two weeks to ensure that every aspect—from logistics to design—was carefully covered. They were an absolute joy to work with.
They had one clear, non-negotiable request:
the ceremony had to face the lake.
As a destination wedding planner in Italy, my role is to protect my couples’ dreams while also guiding them through realistic scenarios—especially when it comes to weather.
Designing with Plan B in Mind: When Details Truly Matter
With this couple, our connection was so strong that Plan B was already part of the creative process, even during the floral design phase. While working on the flower project, we discussed not only what would be perfect for Plan A, but also what could be easily adapted and still look stunning in Plan B.
Originally, the reception was planned around a long imperial table, designed for the outdoor terrace overlooking Lake Como. Knowing that Plan B would require round tables indoors, we intentionally selected centerpieces that could be easily rearranged while maintaining the same elegance, harmony, and visual impact.
These seemingly small decisions make a significant difference.
When planning a destination wedding, even vendor selection and quotation approvals should always take Plan B into consideration. Choosing flexible setups and adaptable designs helps avoid unexpected extra costs and last-minute stress if the weather does not cooperate. This level of foresight ensures that the wedding remains beautiful and cohesive, regardless of last-minute changes.
When the Weather Changes the Script
The couple arrived in Italy one week before the wedding. As often happens in Northern Italy, the weather was unpredictable—cloudy, unusually cold for May, yet still manageable. They remained optimistic.
As the wedding day approached, it became clear that rain was unavoidable. Together, we made the strategic decision to activate Plan B for the cocktail hour and reception, while waiting until the very last moment to decide whether the ceremony could still take place outdoors.
Half an hour before the ceremony, heavy rain began to fall. At that point, we had no choice but to move the ceremony indoors.
It was not what they had envisioned—but thanks to detailed planning, the transition was smooth and stress-free.
A Seamless Wedding Day, Even with Rain
Despite the rain, the day flowed beautifully. Nothing was cut, nothing felt rushed, and guests enjoyed every moment. The atmosphere remained romantic, light, and calm—exactly as the couple had dreamed.
The color palette featured hot pink, purple, and vibrant shades of pink, bringing warmth and personality to the day. The food was authentically Italian, a meaningful choice for the groom, who is Italo-American.
Even the unexpected moments—like an intense, rain-filled couple photo session just before the ceremony—became unforgettable memories.
Why Plan B Is Essential for a Destination Wedding in Italy
This wedding perfectly illustrates why having a professional destination wedding planner is so important. Rain is a concrete risk—one we cannot prevent—but we can prepare for it.
A strong Plan B ensures that:
• Your wedding day is never ruined by weather
• Guests remain comfortable and happy
• The timeline stays intact
• The design remains elegant and intentional
• You can truly enjoy your day without stress
This is a conversation I have with couples quite often, and while it can sometimes be challenging, stories like this one show just how essential it is.
A Wedding That Turned into a Friendship
This couple holds a very special place in my heart. What started as a professional relationship naturally turned into a genuine friendship—one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.
Their Lake Como destination wedding may not have unfolded exactly as planned, but it became everything it needed to be: romantic, joyful, and perfectly balanced.
